Separation Pay Recoupment Timeline

Took VSP or SSB and expect VA disability compensation? VA withholds 100% of your monthly compensation until the separation pay is recouped. This shows exactly how much, and for how long.

The pre-tax VSP/SSB lump sum on your separation orders.

Use the VA Compensation Estimator if you don't know your likely rate.

How this is calculated

When you receive Voluntary Separation Pay (VSP) or Special Separation Benefit (SSB) and later qualify for VA disability compensation, VA does not pay both in full. Instead, VA withholds your entire monthly disability payment — dollar for dollar — until the separation pay has been fully recouped.

This calculator first determines the amount VA will actually recoup. If you check the "recoup the after-tax amount" option, it applies a flat 22% withholding to your gross separation pay figure, since most separation pay issued after September 1996 already had tax withheld at that rate before you received it — meaning VA only needs to recoup the net amount you actually took home. If you leave that box unchecked, it recoups the full gross amount you entered.

From that recoupment total, the calculator builds a month-by-month schedule: each month, it withholds the smaller of your entered VA monthly compensation or whatever balance is still remaining, then carries the remaining balance forward to the next month. This repeats until the balance reaches zero (or up to a 360-month/30-year ceiling, at which point the result is shown as "truncated" since recoupment would take longer than that ceiling to model). The month the balance hits zero is the first month you'd actually receive a VA compensation payment.

Frequently asked questions

Does recoupment affect my VA disability rating?

No. Your disability rating and your eligibility for VA and TRICARE healthcare tied to that rating are unaffected by recoupment — only the monthly cash payment is withheld until the separation pay balance is repaid.

When does recoupment start?

Recoupment begins when VA actually starts paying disability compensation, not at the time you separate or receive your VSP/SSB lump sum. If your VA claim takes months to process, recoupment simply starts later — it doesn't add extra months onto the total withholding period.

What if my VA rating increases later?

A higher rating means a higher monthly compensation amount, which is withheld at the higher rate — so recoupment finishes faster. Conversely, a lower rating slows recoupment down since less is withheld each month.
